Prologue: The Hooded One

"I swear to you…" A man shouted over the howling winter storm, bloody water spilling out from his mouth "…I-I-I know nothing! By the Giants, by my Grand King, I swear it!" His  trembling words carried on the winds at his assailant, a hooded man wrapped in a whirling brown cloak. Turning over onto his stomach the man struggled with all of his might to pull himself across the ice covered river. A thick streak of warm red liquid tailed him on the ground as he ever so slowly tried to flee his attacker.

Like a ghastly specter the Hooded Figure crept across the snow and onto the ice, stepping over a gaping hole which he had dunked his target just moments ago. No words were said as it moved; it was as an animal playing with its already defeated prey. The brown cloaked swirled around the aggressor's body, moving left and right with the blistering mountain winds. No face could be seen, the thick and heavy hood blocked most of the wounded man's view, and the thick falling snow obstructed the rest.

With a pitiful moan the disabled man still tried to make a feeble escape. He could feel his own warm blood slowly coming up through his throat and leaking out of his stomach wound.  "I swear to you…I know nothing!" The man cried he knew if he couldn't stop his attacker it would be the sure end of him.

But once again his wail of mercy was met with just the sound of the wind screaming through the mountain pass. He got no response.

"Please, let me live! I-I-I…" Caving in due to the excruciating pain the man gave up his information. "….I know where the child is hiding! I'll tell you everything. Just please, let me live!"

The hooded figure crept closer, kneeling down to the man bleeding out in the red and white snow. "See, I knew you could come to your senses. Your people are such weaklings when it comes to holding information." It hisses. Using a hand sealed in a leather glove the figure grasped onto the collar of the one crying for mercy, pushing him slowly against the ice. Slowly it began to crack beneath the two.

Defeated the man went limp, his weak and cold body relaxing against the progressively shattering ice. "Ok…Ok…This is what I know!" His voice was weary and pained; clearly this information was important to him.

"Well get on with it!" The hooded figure growled again, impatient.

"The child is hiding within a trade caravan passing through these mountains. By the Giants please don't kill me!" He pleaded like a dog begging for food.

"Do you know where the said caravan is? I can feel this ice growing weaker." The hooded one pushed down a little harder.

"They recently passed through a mountain pass not far from here! North, they were heading north!"

"See…I knew you would come to your senses…Such a shame your people can be so easily persuaded to give up such matters. I pity you really, such a weak willed people. Ones who aren't strong shouldn't be allowed to survive." The figure let go of the man's clothing and stepped away, looking down upon the wounded one with great disdain.

"You…You're going to let me live right?" The man sobbed.

Ignoring the pleas the hooded one looked around in the swirling snow storm. It was as if a wall of white had engulfed them. Not a single thing could be seen in any direction save for a few rocks and winter worn trees. "Such a fitting place don't you think? Such a fitting place for you to parish in, no one will ever look for you here."

"You said you'd let me live!" A spurt of blood erupted out of the man's mouth.

"And why would anyone look for you anyway? Seeing as your people so easily left you behind in this simple weather, your kin are so swift to abandon and turn on each other at the first sign of trouble!" The hooded thing knelt down a little father, coming close to the motionless man's face, mocking him with a maniacal laugh. "And of course you so quickly gave up the information; I thought it would take longer!"

"How dare you speak of my people in such a manner?!"

"And why shouldn't I! You yourself have turned against your own kind! What you've done just now has proven that your kin are weak willed! The weak don't deserve to walk the land; they don't deserve the power your people have gained." A long curved blade shot out from one of the cloak's sleeves. The sharp tip just inches away from the wounded man's face. It glimmered in the little amount of light that beamed through the falling snow.

"You…You said you were going to spare me?" He trembled, eyes growing wide and fearful.

Chuckling, the cloaked one moved in to whispering distance. "I lied!"

A splatter of red blood showered against the pure white snow, tainting it with its bright color. A scream of agony and terror echoed about the mountain rock, being carried a far distance on the swift swirling winds. The ice cracked and the man's body was quickly pulled under and away by the strong current beneath. For long moments the area fell silent, no more screams could be heard and no more conversation.

The wounded man was gone, pulled away by the freezing water underneath the ice. The only evidence that remained was the dark red streaks across the ground where he had, in vain, tried to pull himself away from the assailant. But the hooded figure was gone. It had vanished into the howling snow storm. A single set of footprints heading north were the only signs of the cloaked one. It had moved on, information gathered, it had moved to find the child which the now dead one had spoken of.
There you have it people!
